Andrew H. Kim, MSW, ABD, LSW is a Licensed Social Worker who earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology with a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies and Master of Social Work Degree from Rutgers University. He is working towards his PhD in Social Work at Rutgers. His research applies AI, machine learning, and geospatial methods in social sciences focusing on addiction, intervention, and global poverty with a data justice framework. He has completed his required hours to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC) and is in the process of sitting for the clinical exam. He is currently a lecturer at Rutgers in the MSW program and coadjutant statistics lab instructor in the PhD program.
Andrew has several years of clinical experience in addition to coordinating programs in mental health and addiction services in intensive outpatient (IOP), partial hospitalization program (PHP), and outpatient detox settings. His past work has encompassed individual therapy, family and couple’s sessions, group therapy, case management, and interdisciplinary coordination of client care. He has worked with diverse adult populations ranging from young adults (18+) to older adults (65+) including members of the LGBTQI+ community. He has worked with clients from various cultural backgrounds across different generations of immigration. Andrew specializes in co-occurring cases where the interplay of mental health and addiction (including behavioral addictions) intersect. He plans to begin accepting child cases in the near future.
Andrew utilizes a client-centered, collaborative approach beginning with what the client believes is the most important thing for their therapist to know and continuing to “think out loud” with each other in a natural conversational manner. He utilizes an integrative approach often drawing on Psychodynamic Therapies, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Existential Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) principles and skills. Andrew strives to build a therapeutic relationship where clients feel empowered and safe enough to make a mistake. He believes that if we want something different, we may have to risk doing something different. His goal is to be with and support his clients whether it turns into a lesson learned or a celebration of success. Andrew is under the supervision of Juhi Patel, LCSW.
